Which States Rely on Which Taxes -- New Study Explains

David Brunori | Oct. 14, 2009 05:19 AM EST

Folks should read the new Tax Foundation report on which states rely on which taxes. The report, using new U. S. Census data, will help you understand how the states collect revenue. For example, Oregon, Maryland, Massachusetts, North Carolina, and New York are the states most heavily dependent on individual income taxes. Washington, Nevada, Tennessee, South Dakota, and Arkansas are the most dependent on sales taxes. The states most reliant on property taxes in their state/local mix are New Hampshire, Vermont, New Jersey, Texas, and Rhode Island.
